ABDOMINAL WALL HERNIA

Hillswest Specialists Westmead | Lap Band Surgeons | Hernia

What is an abdominal wall hernia?

A hernia occurs when the inside layer of the abdominal wall has weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear. Hernias can occur in a number of places, most commonly in the abdomen, groin, belly button, or at the site of a previous operation. Some hernias are congenital (existing at birth), while others occur over time as a result of heaving lifting, persistent coughing, or difficulty in bowel movement or urination. The common abdominal wall hernia includes umbilical hernia, inguinal hernia and incisional hernia.

What are the signs and symptoms of an abdominal hernia?

The signs and symptoms of a hernia may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • A bulge under the skin
  • Pain with lifting or coughing
  • Pain associated with straining during urination or bowel movement
  • Pain after prolonged sitting or standing

The pain from a hernia is sometimes dull and constant, but can also be sharp and may worsen with activity. If you experience a severe continuous pain and redness or tenderness, you should contact a physician immediately.

Which test(s)and/or procedure(s) may be requested to determine if I have an abdominal hernia?

Your surgeon can determine if you have a hernia upon physical examination. Additional tests or procedures are usually not necessary.
How is this condition surgically treated?

In most cases, a surgical hernia repair is the only effective treatment.

What is a hernia repair?

A hernia results from the weakening of the abdominal wall. This weakening allows the contents of the abdomen to protrude from the normal boundaries. Hernias are repaired by implanting a sterile surgical mesh to strengthen the weakened abdominal wall.
